How to Enable Copilot in Excel
Check Your Subscription and License
- Ensure you have an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription (such as Business Standard, Business Premium, Business Basic, Apps for business/enterprise, E3, or E5).
- You must also have a Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license assigned to your account. This add-on is purchased separately and is required for Copilot features in Excel.

Update Microsoft Excel
- Open Excel and go to
File > Account > Update Options > Update Now
to ensure you have the latest version.
- Open Excel and go to
Sign In
- Use your Microsoft 365 account credentials to sign in to Excel.
Look for the Copilot Icon
- Once enabled, you’ll see the Copilot icon (a sparkle or Copilot logo) in the Excel ribbon, usually on the Home tab.
Copilot Feature: Instantly Analyze Your Data
With Copilot, you can get instant insights from your data with a simple prompt:
- Click the Copilot icon in the ribbon.
- In the Copilot panel, type a prompt like:
"Summarize the key trends in this sales data and suggest three actionable insights."
- Copilot will analyze your selected data and generate a summary, trends, and recommendations—right inside your spreadsheet.
Pro Tip:
- You can ask Copilot to create formulas, generate charts, or explain complex data. Just select your data, click Copilot, and describe what you need.
